Burning 500 calories in a day is not some magical number but doing it day in and day out will mean that you will lose on average 1 pound a week. While there are many activities that will burn 500 calories at a time most people will find that if you break up your day and burn 75 calories here or 50 calories there it is much easier to reach your goal of burning 500 calories in a day. Eating less will trigger your metabolism to slow down. This explains why it is so hard to lose weight just by eating less. That is why it is so important to include exercise as part of any weight loss program.

1. An hour of gardening burns 350 to 500 calories per hour.

2. Jogging at 5 miles per hour will burn around 500 calories per hour.

3.  Shake your groove thing. Dance for just two hours and torch 500 calories. (A little air guitar will burn a few extra calories, too.). During a night on the town with friends you can do two hours of dancing without even thinking about it.

4. Don’t eat in front of the TV. You’ll eat up to 288 calories more, according to research from the University of Massachusetts. Instead, eat at the table, and trade one hour of TV for a casual walk. Together, that’s 527 calories burned.

5. Use smaller plates. Swap your 12-inch plate for a 10-inch one. You’ll eat 20 to 25 percent less—and save up to 500 calories. You won’t feel any less full, either, researchers say.

6. Kick the soda habit. A 12-ounce soft drink has about 150 to 180 calories. If you down two or three a day, you’re getting lots of extra calories. Quench your thirst with water and save as many as 540 calories.

7. Get out your knitting needles. An afternoon of knitting can burn more than 500 calories (at a rate of about 100 an hour).

8. Clean house. Tidy up for 2 1/2 hours and burn 510 calories.

9. Mowing your lawn for one hour using a walk behind mower will result in 420 calories being burned.

10. Bicycling at a moderate pace for 1 hour will burn 544 calories. At a leisurely rate (less than 10 mph) will burn a little over 500 calories.
